Twenty years ago, Aladdin, Agrabad’s much sought after rugrat, promised princess Jasmine a whole new world, and it looks like he’s kept his word. He has brought her and all the characters of Disney’s beloved story to India. That too as a spectacular musical, and together, they will enthrall the audience at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai this April.
After the massive success of the Broadway musical debut of Beauty and the Beast in India, Aladdin’s troupe is Disney India’s newest offering to the country. And we couldn’t be more stoked! After Mumbai, the show will move to Delhi and Hyderabad in the months to follow. And like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, too, has been reimagined and developed by an Indian creative team to make it locally relevant, without losing the original essence of a Broadway show.
“Disney stories are timeless and have a special meaning for everyone in the family. Stories like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast are universal and engage fans everywhere. In India, we are committed to developing world-class entertainment that families can relate to and which becomes a part of their everyday lives. We partnered with BookMyShow, given their deep understanding of the local audience and their quality of consumer engagement,” says Abhishek Maheshwari, country head, Disney India.
Produced by BookMyShow, the muscial boasts extravagant sets, lavish costumes, beautiful choreography, mesmerising special effects and, let’s not forget, the flying magic carpet! Over 50 artistes will weave the enchanting story on stage, taking the viewers along on Aladdin’s adventures.
“Standards of live entertainment in India are rapidly catching up with the rest of the world and we are proud to have been continuously playing our part in this transformative journey. We are absolutely excited to produce the Indian stage version of Disney’s Aladdin which will open its doors to the audiences soon. It promises to be an extravagant visual feast, filled with music, joy, and loads of theatrical magic,” says Ashish Hemrajani, CEO and founder, BookMyShow.
“Disney’s Aladdin will be reimagined locally with an all-Indian cast and creative talent. The story of Aladdin has universal appeal and is highly popular with the Indian audience. The musical is an entertaining celebration of Aladdin’s love for Jasmine and his friendship with Genie. This thrilling new production, filled with magic and humour, will transport fans to a whole new world,” says Vikranth Pawar, head, live entertainment and local content studio, Disney India.
