Designer Samant Chauhan kickstarted the Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2018 with a bang, and how! As spectators, we look forward to stunning models with hourglass figures sashaying down the ramp, but we were in for a treat when eight elderly male models took to the ramp in the middle of the show. Dressed to perfection in Chauhan’s designs, they made for the first high on Day 1 of the mega fashion event. “This is an attempt to break free from everything we are used to…everything familiar to us. So I kept an entire section for these male models right in the middle of the show,” the designer explained.
As far as the collection goes, Chauhan’s showcase was an ode to the absence of colour. “It is an attempt to look beyond the rainbow and gaze deep into the black hole,” he said. The garments collapsed everything the designer has created over the years – the fabric, the embroidery as well as the silhouettes deviated from his signature style. The designer agreed, saying, “The collection is a clear departure from what you would expect in a quintessential Samant Chauhan collection. The stones that we have used are reminders of royalty. I have used sequins and glass beads too – something I have rarely used before.”
A standout element in the collection was Chauhan’s use of black. He explained, “I have always been asked why I prefer shades of white for my collections and my reply has always been that I am colourblind! For the longest time, I have resisted black and its fathomless depth. But the shadows around me helped me focus for this line, and create the elaborate silhouettes and contours for it. They say if we are without shadows, we aren’t living beings. And so, I looked for beauty in darkness this time.”
