A displaced house, ominous grey clouds, a derailed train. No, these are not elements of a brooding story but the underlying theme of Nitin Bal Chauhan’s showcase at the ongoing Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2018. While designers find their design inspiration in nature, flowers, architecture or even a season, Chauhan found his in the pain and misery of being displaced.
“We don’t always talk about it but it is one of the most heart wrenching things that can befall a family, a society and even a county – be it Syria or Africa or any other country. I feel deeply about this change that is happening in the world right now and I felt this was the right platform to showcase my work on the subject,” said the designer.
The ensembles were designed accordingly – oversized garments, tough quilt fabrics treated in a way to pin point the theme of displacement and the chaos it brings with it. “Which is why a few of them are inside out…to depict the feeling of helplessness and chaos when everything turns upside down,” he added.
It was, however, the elaborate headgear that drove the theme home. Dark clouds over a house, a derailed train track, a car crash – these were few of the elements depicted on the headgears. “Headgears provide a deeper glimpse into a collection. Sometimes, with the just the clothes, you might miss out the point but the headgears drive home the point. My use of the accessory was to bring out the emotion more clearly and sensitise the people about what is happening around us. It is often said that fashion reflects our society and I have just showcased real situations,” the designer concluded, with the promise that he would showcase e the second part of the collection on the next season.
