Bollywood Film Secret Superstar Takes China by Storm
Secret Superstar

Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar overtakes Dangal’s opening collection in China, makes Rs 174.10 crore in 3 days.

Though China and India might not see eye-to-eye on political and territorial issues when it comes to loving Hindi cinema, the notion of ‘Hindi-Chini Bhai-Bhai’ doesn’t seem like a distant dream. One of the Bollywood actors who continues to receive unprecedented love from the Chinese film going audience is actor Aamir Khan.

Over the years, his films, in particular, have been unconditionally loved and shown resounding results. His film Dangal became the leggiest movie in the Chinese box office, running successfully for months, catapulting its international collection and taking its gross worldwide to more than Rs 2000 crore.

While the film may have stopped at earnings of Rs 63.40 crore in India despite a festive Diwali release, the Aamir Khan and Zaira Wasim starrer Secret Superstar was released in China recently and not to anyone’s surprise, the film received an overwhelming response. As per the latest collection figures, the movie has earned Rs 236.81 crore in just five days. Here’s what noted film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote on Twitter:

It’s interesting to note that at Rs 43.35 crore, Secret Superstar beat the first day collections of Khan’s sports drama blockbuster Dangal (Rs14.67 crore), which is currently the highest-grossing Indian film in China. The Nitesh Tiwari-directed film had made close to Rs2,000 crore in China.

The film seems to have struck the right chord not only with the audience but also with critics. According to a report in a Chinese film critic website, Secret Superstar has a rating of 9.5 out of 10.

The movie tells the story of a young girl who wishes to be a singer. However, her father does not allow her to do so and she decides to share her singing with the world through YouTube. The 14-year-old sets up her own YouTube channel and starts posting videos of herself singing. She hides her identity wearing a burkha and rises to fame. The movie also captures the bond between a mother and daughter beautifully. She doesn’t have a supportive father, but her mother is the one who supports her dream and at times, Meher’s (who plays her mother) act will bring tears to your eyes.

Secret Superstar’s Chinese collections come as great news for Indian films. It also opens up avenues for smaller-budgeted Indian movies beyond the Indian market.
