Just before entering the fourth year of governance, PM Narendra Modi has taken the step of reshuffling the portfolios of ministries. From temporarily assigning Finance Ministry and Corporate Affairs to Piyush Goyal to removing Smriti Irani from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and assigning it to Minister of State (Independent Charge) Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, the Cabinet went through many changes. The reallocation was announced on Monday evening at Rashtrapati Bhawan and no swearing in ceremony took place as there is neither any new induction nor there is a change in ranks of the reshuffled ministers.
Railway and Coal Minister, Piyush Goyal has been temporarily assigned the Finance and Corporate Affairs as Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley underwent a renal transplant surgery. Piyush Goyal will continue with his charge of other ministries. SS Ahluwalia has replaced Alphons Kannanthanam as Minister of State in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. He will assist Cabinet Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in the ministry. Alhuwalia has been relieved as MoS in charge of Drinking Water and Sanitation while Kannanthanam retains his duties as MoS (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Tourism.
Smriti Irani is facing a second downgrade in the portfolio. The first one was from the HRD portfolio in July 2016. Irani will retain the Textiles.
