When a tech luminary makes doomsday predictions, you’ve gotta sit up and take notice! Billionaire Elon Musk, of Tesla, SpaceX and more fame, has expressed his fears that the artificial intelligence (AI) race might in due course spark off World War 3!

The response apparently was sparked off by a comment from Russian President Vladimir Putin, where he said: “Artificial intelligence is the future not only of Russia but of all of mankind. There are huge opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to foresee today.”

In a series of tweets, Musk said the following:

“China, Russia, soon all countries w strong computer science. Competition for AI superiority at national level most likely cause of WW3 imo.”

“May be initiated not by the country leaders, but one of the AI’s, if it decides that a prepemptive strike is most probable path to victory”

“Govts don’t need to follow normal laws. They will obtain AI developed by companies at gunpoint, if necessary.”

In the past, too, Musk has sounded the alarm over the perils of AI, believing new regulation was essential to keep the public safe. His ventures in the AI domain include OpenAI, a non-profit AI research company, and Neuralink, a startup that manufactures devices connecting computers to the human brain.

Not everyone agrees with him, though. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, said during a Facebook Live broadcast: “I think that people who are naysayers and kind of try to drum up these doomsday scenarios — I just, I don’t understand it. I think it’s really negative and in some ways I actually think it is pretty irresponsible.”

Musk was quick to respond, with the following:

“I’ve talked to Mark about this. His understanding of the subject is limited.”
