The civet cat poop, from which the most expensive brew is made is now being produced in India.

Poop? You’ve heard it right! But its not just what you are wondering! It’s coffee processed out of it! A start-up firm in Karnataka, Coorg Consolidated Commodities (CCC), has ventured into making the luxury coffee on a small scale and also decided to open a cafe to serve the brew to the locals.

What is civet cat poop? So, the civet coffee, also called Luwark coffee is produced from the ripest coffee bean cherries digested by civet cat. It’s important to know that only the fleshy part is eaten by the cats and not the bean. Then the poop of this cat is collected, processed and sold.

Why is civet coffee expensive? Well, it is because of the uncommon method of producing the coffee, which involves the animal dropping, wastage during processing and quality certification. It is also claimed to be highly nutritious as natural enzymes in civet’s stomach enhances the bean flavour.

Where is it widely consumed? Gulf nations, Europe and Indonesia.

Priced at? It is sold for Rs 20,000 to 25,000 per kg overseas and for Rs 8,000 per kg in India.

So, where do we find it here in India? The start-up firm is selling the coffee under the brand ‘Ainmane’ and they have opened one outlet in Club Mahindra Madikeri Resort.
