Japanese are mesmerised with India’s famous Mithila art and want it to be engraved on the country’s trains. Japanese officials have requested Railway Ministry to send a team of Mithila artists to do this task.

The folk art of Madhubani painting belongs to Bihar’s Mithila region and is known for its geometric patterns and vibrant colours. In August 2018, Indian Railways also painted coaches of Bihar Sampark Kranti with this traditional art work. Other trains including Rajdhani Express and Jansadharan Express were also decorated with these paintings. Twenty two coaches of the Patna Rajdhani Express were also engraved with Mithila art work.

The idea to paint trains took shape after the traditional art was done on Madhubani Railway Station in Bihar. It had later spread to other stations including Patna Junction, Rajendra Nagar station and Danapur station. Madhubani Railway Station also won an award in a station beautification competition, organised at Rail Bhavan, last year.
