Manipur civil rights activist Irom Sharmila married her long-time partner Desmond Coutinho in a simple ceremony in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, where she currently lives. The function was modest and no invitation was sent out. Rings were exchanged and legal papers were signed. The families of the bride and groom were not present at the ceremony either.
The couple had to wait for nearly two months to clear the legal formalities and finally obtained their marriage papers under the Special Marriage Act 1954 from the Kodaikanal sub-registrar’s office yesterday.
Sharmila plans to settle in Kodaikanal with Coutinho, a British national. She had told reporters that the small hill town was a peaceful place and that her search for peace had ended there. However, she will continue with her activism and mentioned that she would raise her voice for the welfare of the tribals of Kodaikanal.
