Lilly Singh (or Superwoman as per her digital alias) is funny, witty, at times sarcastic, has a heart of gold and was appointed as UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador recently. She joins the likes of David Beckham, Orlando Bloom, Jackie Chan, Liam Neeson, Priyanka Chopra, Ricky Martin and Shakira. Wow, right?
Today was a wonderful and humbling day. I'm honoured to announce that I am the newest Global Goodwill Ambassador for @unicef. Not only am I one of the youngest ambassadors ever appointed, but I'm also the first ever ambassador from the digital space. Having said that, I feel a responsibility to bring a fresh perspective to this role. I'm excited not just for myself, but for my amazing audience to join me in doing our part to make the world a better place for all children. Many youth around the world don't have the privileges we do and therefore it's our job to work for them, fight for them and speak up for them. I've got projects stirring in my mind but when it comes to humanity, we're in this together! So if you have any ideas at all to support children's needs around the world please comment below and I'll be sure to engage. Thank you 🙏🏽 #ForEveryChild
The Indo-Canadian YouTube star will use her online presence to engage with children, interact with them and encourage them to voice the problems and challenges they face in everyday life. Her YouTube platform will showcase UNICEF’s work and she wishes to “engage my supporters to advocate for children’s rights”. Her new role with the organisation is complemented by her Girl Love initiative, which aims to end girl-on-girl hate and support women across the world.
While on her trip to India, she travelled to Madhya Pradesh and met young adolescents growing up within challenging circumstances, poverty being a major one, but who have also been able to bring positive changes in their lives.
These kids from Madhya Pradesh, India were so excited to say hi to you. It was an honour to visit their school and learn about their lives. Although we are from different places and experience different challenges, this picture symbolizes something very universal: humanity. Humans have a natural desire to connect with one another. And with our privilege, it is not only our job to connect but to also take ownership in the entire human experience. It's our job to be global citizens who are aware of all the wonderful and heart wrenching things happening around the world. Admittedly there isn't always an immediate solution to world problems. Sometimes the solution is simply to connect and be a part of the conversation. That's how progress is made. So say hello back to your brothers and sisters👋🏽🙏🏽❤️ @unicef
“I am honoured to join UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador, and to use my voice to support its mission of reaching every child,” the 28-year-old said and added, “The children I have met here are overcoming so many challenges – and they are living proof of what a child can achieve, if given a chance.”
