With the ‘deadline’ for linking Aadhaar and PAN card having expired on June 30, taxpayers who missed linking the two documents are either confused or panicking about what will happen now.

If you are a taxpayer, then you must link your Aadhaar with your PAN immediately to avoid problems during tax season. If you haven’t done it already, do not fret about your PAN card turning invalid. You still have time and can link it now. However, the government will also soon announce a date after which a PAN not linked to Aadhaar will be considered invalid.

The process is quite simple – you can link Aadhaar to PAN by SMS or online. However, with the Income Tax e-filing portal experiencing heavy traffic influx, SMS seems to be a convenient option. Follow the steps below to link Aadhaar and PAN card by SMS:

  1. The Income Tax department’s facility to link Aadhaar and PAN by SMS provides users with two numbers: 567678, and 56161.
  2. You need to send the SMS in the following format – UIDPAN<SPACE>123456789012<SPACE>ABCDE12345. In this, the 12-digit number represents your Aadhaar number, while the second one represents your PAN card number.

Though the process to link Aadhaar to PAN by SMS or the Internet is a must for all tax payers, it is also compulsory for those whose incomes do not fall under the taxable bracket. According to the government, this step will help curb tax evasion in the country.
