Hollywood veteran Morgan Freeman was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 24th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. After accepting the honour from actor Rita Moreno, he said, “I got on stage the first time when I was eight…by 12, there was no question [that he wanted to be an actor].”
Director Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won three awards, including the marquee film ensemble prize. Actress Frances McDormand was awarded for her stellar performance as the lead character in the movie while her co-actor Sam Rockwell won for his supporting role.
Actor Gary Oldman continued his awards-season run, winning for his performance as Winston Churchill in Joe Wright’s directorial Darkest Hour.
Popular television series This is Us picked up two awards at the ceremony – in the ‘Ensemble in a Drama Series’ and the ‘Male Actor’ categories, the later being awarded to Sterling K Brown.
Actors Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgard took trophies for playing unconventional spouses in the television show Big Little Lies. This was Kidman’s 10th nomination at the SAG Awards and her first win. The actress, who attended despite battling the flu, was thrilled. “To receive this at this stage in my life is extraordinary and at this time in the industry when these things are going on,” she said, “How wonderful it is that our careers today can go beyond 40 years old. Twenty years ago, we were pretty washed up by this stage in our lives.”
While Veep was voted the winner in the ‘Comedy Ensemble’ category, its lead actor Julia Louis-Dreyfus won for her portrayal of her character Selina Meyer. The actor, who is currently undergoing chemo treatment was unable to attend the ceremony, but she did leave a heartfelt tweet: “I wish I could have been at SAG Awards tonight but have to admit it’s pretty fun to watch in my pj’s. So honoured to win. So proud to be a union member. So happy for my ‘Veep’ bozos for winning ensemble award. Miss being at the table with you all. How was the chicken? (sic)”
