In his lifetime, Paul Newman, American actor, film director, producer, race car driver, IndyCar owner, entrepreneur, activist, and philanthropist, received much fame and many awards. And now, one of his iconic possessions has sold for a record price!
Worn by Newman for over 15 years, the watch was put up for auction by Phillips in New York, selling for $17.8 million and shattering the previous $11 million record for a watch, in the process.
The watch was gifted to Newman by his wife Joanne Woodward, and he wasseen wearing the iconic stainless steel watch on countless occasions. Before giving her husband the watch, Woodward had the words “Drive Carefully, Me” engraved on the back, because of her anxiety over his fast driving three years after he was injured in a 1965 motorcycle accident.
