If you have been planning to visit Kerala at a time when the famous Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race takes place, make sure you don’t miss the opportunity this year. What’s so special about this year’s race is that, one of the participant boats, will be captained by a three-year old!
Three-year old Ayen Moonnuthaickal will be the captain of Moonnuthaickal Iruttukuthi, an Agrade boat that has been finishing first in the Iruttukuthi A-grade category since past four years. Vadakkan Brothers from Thrissur will be leading the boat under the kid’s guidance.
Ayden’s father, Alan Moonnuthaickal, is confident that his son will retain the trophy this year as well. He was quoted saying ‘My son is very interested in the race. He likes inspiring the oarsmen. So, my family decided to give the captaincy of our A-grade boat to my son. I am sure he will retain the trophy. He is so excited and has started practising’.
Conducted on the second Saturday of August every year at Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha in Kerala, this year’s race will be held on August 12.
Watching 100–120 feet long canoes made of a wood, carrying 90-110 rowers each and moving like a snake through the channels, is an eye-catching sight for sure. While the excitement has already caught up within the participants of the race and locals who are as eager to watch the unique spectacle, hotel and other stays are fast filling up. We suggest, you better hurry.
