Instagram has announced a standlone app for watching long-form vertical video. The app is called IGTV and will allow you to play videos from the people you follow. It will also have personalised recommendation from elsewhere in the Instagram and is available on iOS and Android.
CEO of Instagram, Kevin Systrom said that the app was designed to make it easier to find and watch videos on the mobile phone. This app will allow users to browse through a directory as opposed to television. All you have to do is open the app and the video will start playing itself. Among other highlights, the “lean back” mode could make IGTV a powerful new place for Instagram to put ads.
A product manager said, “IGTV will also allow creators to upload video directly to Instagram, representing an effort to turn the app into a home for mobile video to rival YouTube.” In the app, the videos can be up to 10 minutes long to start, with larger accounts able to post hourlong videos. Over the long term, the company expects to let all users post videos of unlimited length, Systrom said.
