Wondering where is Alia Bhatt’s kurti from Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya or Jaya Bachchan’s sari from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham? They are all safe on the upper floor of the 13,000 sq ft, high-ceilinged warehouse of Dharma Production.
The warehouse of Dharma Productions is in Goregaon, Mumbai. It has identical glass-front metal almirahs lined up in narrow aisles. The place has everything from Alia Bhatt’s jacket from Student of the Year to Ranbir Kapoor’s Louis Vuitton backpack from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. There is a separate trunk just full of Anushka Sharma’s beanies and boho handbags from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
The whole set up is completely high-tech. Everything from lehenga, leather jacket, slipper to sneaker or towel has an inventory on the computer that keeps track of the costumes and props. After the shooting, all the costumes and props are dry-cleaned, photographed, tagged and entered into the system along with the name of the movie, colour and description.
This warehouse has most expensive products. It has trunks and cupboards full of accessories from every brand that one can think of. Among the almirahs, you will find a tag ‘Specially crafted for SRK’ which has collars of Shah Rukh Khan’s shirts from Dear Zindagi.
After the costumes are used in a production, background dancers and actors in future productions go on to use the clothes with minor changes.
