From a Toffee to a Red Devil to a Toffee again, Wayne Rooney has come full circle! The much-loved footballer made a return to the club where he began it all – Everton FC – for an as-yet undisclosed fee. He is believed to have taken a significant pay cut, though, a testament both to how things changed for him at Old Trafford and to the magnetism of Goodison Park.
For a while now, Rooney has not exactly been in favour at United. His frustration mounted over time when he was repeatedly left out of the starting line-up by mercurial manager José Mourinho, who did ask him to stay on till the end of the season and pitch in for certain games. Being dropped from the English national squad for matches against France and Scotland did not help, and performing well back at Everton could certainly revive his Premier League performances and also possibly convince England manager Gareth Southgate to include him in the squad.
At Everton, he is expected to return to an attacking position, instead of the midfield position he often assumed at Manchester United. His experience too will be critical for the players at his new club as they seek to mount an attack towards glory in the Premier League.
